Alan Cotton awarded MBE

The South West Academy is delighted to announce that Alan Cotton, past Chair and Trustee of The Academy was awarded an MBE for services to the Arts in the South West in the New Year Honours list.

Alan was one of the Founders of the South West Academy, at the start of the Millennium, and the first President. He has been a central figure in the arts in the region for many years, has served on the board of the Exeter and Devon Arts Centre and played a pivotal role in raising lottery funding to develop the Exeter Phoenix Arts Centre. Alan sat on the Fine Art Committee of the University of Exeter, as well as supporting many other arts organisations and Art Societies as President or Patron.

In addition to being a Trustee of The Academy for many years, Alan worked with the Arts Department of the University of Bath developing their new arts complex and he is now their first Honorary Professor of Arts. He has received Honorary Doctorates from the Universities of both Exeter and Bath.

We congratulate Alan on his award and are pleased that he continues to be an Academician of The South West Academy.
