Judith Cummings SWAc
Judith has lived and worked in Devon all her life. Primarily she is self-taught, having always been interested in painting and drawing, but in 2012 began to devote her time fully to painting.
Painting mainly in oils much of her work is portraits, tending to focus on the female face. These are painted from a mixture of life and imagination, being inspired from experience and found images. Her aim is to create atmosphere and to portray emotion through these paintings to provoke responses within the viewer.
She also enjoys painting a mixture of still life and landscapes. Whilst painting still life from her studio, her landscapes are painted outside with subjects taken from the coast, along the river Otter or the Devon country side near to her home. She can often be spotted clambering over gates and into fields with her painting kit looking for a better view. Her landscapes are based on her tireless pursuit of trying to capture light.
She continues to strive for self-improvement and development and has been influenced and encouraged by the South West Academy having exhibited with them on several occasions in the last few years. In 2015 she was presented with the Lionel Aggett Award. Inspired by this she has gone on to exhibit with the Thelma Hulbert Gallery, The Royal West of England Academy in Bristol and The Mall Galleries London. Judith was elected an Academician of the South West Academy in 2019.
