I graduated from Exeter College of Art with a professional career as a freelance illustrator, working extensively for the Guardian, Observer, Independent, Country Living and Cosmopolitan with 12 years on The Times editorial art team.
Relocation to the Southwest in 2003 inspired a return to fine art and drawing. I joined Exeter's Double Elephant Printworkshop in 2009, combining this love of drawing with learning the craft of print and I am now a Director.
Landscape and weather are all recurring themes. Rapid sketches and exploratory drawings are made all year round, in all weathers. Storms can blow pages into dirty puddles or tumble whole books down Cornish cliffs. I walk and draw, recording life in the raw - back lanes, mudflats at low tide, deserted coastlines, bare winter fields - exploring the pattern, light and energy of the land. These sketchbooks provide the basic material for printmaking and mixed media pieces that use charcoal, gesso, graphite, ink and slashes of colour.
Seaton Hole to Beer Head, Collagraph Print
The studio has an etching press as my work is intaglio, with an emphasis on collagraphs and drypoint. I cut, scribe, draw, paint and work into the plate surface to create an image. Our landscape and the English seasons dictate a muted colour palette. In the prints, a second 'plate' or bright brush strokes can add graphic elements or highlight details. Work is produced on quality fine art paper using professional inks and materials.
Since my return to Devon, I've taken part in Dorset Arts Week, Lyme Arts Fest, Exeter Open Studios and SWAC Open Shows. Prints and drawings have been exhibited across the UK and most recently at Shed Gallery/Barcelona, RWA/Bristol, Mark Hix/Shoreditch, Malthouse/Lyme Regis, Thelma Hulbert/Honiton, RAM Museum/Exeter, Brook Gallery/Exeter.
In January 2017 I was elected Full Member of the Devon Guild of Craftsmen in the discipline of printmaking.
