Martin was born in Yorkshire in 1942, and after a career in building and architectural design,
became a full-time painter in 1998. His work reflects his early academic background in human
and physical geography, a design base in architecture, and a life-long passion for remote country
and wild places. Self-taught, he has his own distinctive eye for the landscape, and for mans'
marks on the landscape, on which much of his work is based, with the emphasis on form and structure.
He has gradually moved towards abstraction, following his interest in American Expressionism and
aboriginal art, and widening the subject matter to cover themes such as migration, loss, and
simply being in a particular landscape, playing with colour and form.
Martin has travelled widely, mainly in the wild places - Nepal, Patagonia,
the Arctic regions, the Atacama, Arizona, and lived in the Windward Islands
for five years - and all this informs his current work. He lives on the
edge of Dartmoor, which has always been an inspiration, as has the Cornish
coast. He has held numerous solo and shared exhibitions, in various
galleries here in Britain and in the United States, where his work
has been represented in California for many years.
