An Honours Graduate of St Martin's, London, Greg Mason lives and paints in Devon. His practice resonates with classic traditions of figurative art - focussing on the female nude and landscape - whilst retaining a modern approach that is both authentic to the subject matter and grounded in contemporary mark making. Although based in his studio 'Hope Hall' in Exeter he loves working en 'plein air' - as this gives an immediacy to the way in which responses are made to subject and light. Greg works in oil on linen, constructing and deconstructing work in order to find the moment that captures the energy and emotion of a place or person. Inspired by artists such as Gwen John, Whistler, Lucian Freud and more recently modern figurative artists such as Alex Kanevsky, Greg looks for authenticity in the encounter with his subject and happily takes commissions for both landscapes and portraits.
Greg has shown at the Affordable Art Fair in London and Bristol, South West Academy of Fine and Applied Art Open Exhibitions, Hybrid gallery in Honiton, scotland.art in Glasgow, Corte Real Gallery in Portugal and recently participated in the Sky Landscape Artists of the Year TV show. Greg runs Hope Hall as a community arts venue offering painting and drawing classes, musical events and studio/exhibition space.
