Oil painter Debbie Coles lives in Devon on the stunning Jurassic Coast which provides infinite
opportunities for her to work from life and direct observation, whether it be from the margins of
the coastline where the dramatic red sandstone and chalk cliffs meet the sea or the banks of
meandering rivers, their estuaries and habitat. Debbie’s paintings reflect her response to capturing
the immediacy of a moment in time and a sense of place, her mood reflected in each of her
paintings; optimistic, upbeat and vibrant. Rhythm and harmony of colour, light, movement,
economy of brushstroke are important elements of her work.
In the studio when the weather is against her, Debbie will set up a still life from her hoard of ‘nature
morte treasures’ or she will try to resolve a plein air painting deemed not to be a ‘keeper’ or use it as
a reference to work up into a larger scale, allowing her to be more considered and creative.
Having painted all of her adult life, Debbie enjoys experimenting with a variety of forms of the visual
arts, although she always returns to her true love of painting in oils. Her work is predominantly
exhibited in the South West and most recently at The Mall Galleries, London.
